Neural (Scar) Therapy

Neural (Scar) Therapy

Neural therapy provides patients with a significant and nearly immediate pain relief that has so numerous other health benefits. It’s an excellent, safe, and low-cost complementary therapy for anyone suffering from chronic illness or pain

Many of us have scars from surgery, trauma, or illnesses, that can result in emotional or physical trauma to become trapped in those scars. Due to the trauma in the scar, it can cause our autonomic nervous system (ANS) to become blocked which can cause symptoms such as pain, inflammation, inability to heal, fatigue, and leave turned on the fight or flight part of our nervous system (sympathetic dominate). Neural therapy can be used to repair and bring balance back to your nervous system. It is a safe and effective treatment that has been used since the early 1900s which is also referred to scar therapy, trigger point or nerve block injections.

Neural therapy is a way of correcting or restoring the ANS that has become triggered by electrical disturbances, called "interference fields," in the body's electrophysiology.  The electoral disturbance can cause the cell membranes to be unstable that can trigger abnormal responses in the autonomic nervous system if it is not corrected. The ANS controls the involuntary functions of your body that are required to survive such as breathing, the heart beating, body temperature regulation, digestion, hormone production, circulation, and more.

Interference fields can be found almost anywhere in the body and are often far from the part of the body experiencing symptoms. The most common form of an interference field in the body is scar tissue due to the damage causing abnormal signals in within the ANS which is where we get referred pain from. The area where we think the pain is coming is actually from another place on the body that is nowhere near the scar. For example, an old appendix or C-section scar might be causing migraine headaches, or a wisdom tooth extraction scar may cause chronic low-back pain. For the most part, these relationships are totally unpredictable and interference fields must be searched for everywhere in the body. Any symptom related to bodily functions controlled by the autonomic nervous system, such as heart palpitations, bronchospasms, indigestion, constipation, sexual dysfunction, painful periods, or cold hands/feet, can be potentially or entirely caused by an interference field.

How does Neural Therapy Work?

Within an interference field in the body, the surface of the cells carries an abnormal electrical charge, and this causes abnormal signals to be sent from the nerves to the brain. These abnormal signals then generate abnormal reaction in the ANS. To help normalize the electoral charge, an injection of local anesthetic (usually procaine) is inserted into these abnormal cells. The injection helps to improves cellular function, calm the system by allowing toxins to leave, and vital nutrients to enter the cells. Additionally, pain is reduced, and the cells have the ability to restore and heal.

What kind of conditions are good for neural therapy?

  • Scar tissue from surgeries or accidents
  • Keloid scars
  • Chronic Illness
  • Physical or Emotional Trauma
  • Infections
  • Childbirth
  • Tattoos
  • Burns
  • Dental Work
  • Vaccines

How is Neural Therapy Performed?

Neural therapy is done by injecting procaine (a local anesthetic) into the scar, subcutaneous tissue, or trigger point with a fine small needle. Usually, the injection feels like a small mosquito bite but it can be more intense. The discomfort from the injection depends on how sensitive the area is, thickness of the scar, and depth. Most patients feel an instant relief followed by an emotional release, more energy, euphoria, or release of toxins that have been held onto. Injecting direct into scars is believed that it can help to restore function to damaged nerve cells, release neuromuscular tension, and reduce pain.

To help aid in additional healing, we have found that by adding ozone after the procaine can be very beneficial.

Why do we use Procaine?

Originally created as the first in 1905 by Alfred Einhorn who was a German chemist. It is known to help stabilize the membranes of mast cells and nerves. Procaine has a quick half-life of 15 to 20 minutes and then breaks down into B vitamins.

How many treatments do you need per scar?

Everyone and every scar are unique which means it can take one treatment to six neural therapy injections. With each subsequent injection, the patients notice that the benefits last longer than the first injection. Most patients need around three treatments, but we’ve experienced people seeing results from just one injection.

How safe is it?

Neural therapy is a amazingly safe medical treatment with minimal side effects. Occasionally, some patients do have minor bruising or increased pain after the first injection. A few patients can feel a bit faint right after an injection, which is caused by a brief the heart rate slowing due to the anesthetic and this only lasts a few minutes. People who are allergic to anesthetics such as procaine and lidocaine, are not able to receive neural therapy. Lastly, any injection-based therapy, there always a risk for infection but our highly trained staff uses only the proper medical protocols and equipment, so this risk is very uncommon.

What conditions may prevent successful treatment?

Usually, the reason someone may have a reduced response to neural therapy is due to the medications with a prefix of " anti-" because it blocks the autonomic nervous system. Examples would be antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, antihypertensives. Also, illicit drugs will block it as well. Another reason is poor nutrition due to mineral and vitamin deficiencies causing interference fields to either recur or the reaction to treatment will not improve with time.

Lastly, toxins such as drugs, tobacco and alcohol, environmental toxins (organic solvents, herbicides, fungicides) and the metals in dental amalgam fillings (especially mercury) poison the ANS. To help improve the response to neural therapy, we may recommend complementary therapies, such as IV therapy, detox, and lifestyle changes to correct the above issues.

If you have any health conditions or take any medications, please be sure to let your practitioner know, just to be safe.
