PRP

PRP

Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood and is composed largely of water and proteins, and provides a medium for red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate through the body. Platelets are blood cells that cause blood clots and other necessary growth healing functions and platelet activation plays a key role in the body's natural healing process. PRP therapy uses injections of a concentration of the patient's own platelets to accelerate the healing of scars injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. PRP injections are prepared by using anywhere from 30-60mLs of the patient's blood and running it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These activated platelets are then injected directly into injured or diseased body tissue. This releases the growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells the body produces.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS?

A PRP injection is a low-risk procedure and is not known to cause major side effects. The procedure involves a blood draw, and therefore it is imperative the patient is hydrated and has eaten prior to the procedure. Because PRP injections are made up of the patient's own cells and plasma, the risk of an allergic reaction is much lower than with other injectable medications such as steroids. Less common risks of PRP injections include bleeding, tissue damage, infection, and nerve injuries. After the procedure, the patient may experience some soreness and bruising at the injection site.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRP?

PRP reduces scarring, stimulates hair growth, skin rejuvenation, kick starts collagen, and reduces hyperpigmentation.

WHAT ARE THE CONTRAINDICATIONS?

PRP should not be used in patients with blood borne diseases, such as hepatitis and HIV. The same applies to chronic skin diseases, blood coagulation disorders, autoimmune diseases, cancer and liver diseases. Pregnant women are advised to not undergo PRP treatment.

WHAT IS THE COST?

An initial consultation is done to evaluate how many treatments the patient would need. Be Whole Wellness Center offers cost saving packages and provides financing for procedures through Cherry Technologies Inc.
